Treatments

The overall aim is to ensure you take the maximum benefit you can from each of your treatment sessions. For this reason I can mix-and-match between treatments in order to tailor the experience to your requirements, needs and wishes. What follows are brief descriptions of the treatments I offer, from which we can chose what is most appropriate for you.

General Session Format

Prior to starting your very first treatment we will sit down for between 5 - 15 minutes to discuss your relevant history, complete a simple medical form, then talk about what you want from the treatment. If beneficial I will also perform a Postural Assessment along with some salient tests to help identify the most beneficial treatments for you. The tests will form a part of your individual and confidential record. They will be repeated as as your treatment progresses so that we can note any changes and tailor the ongoing treatment plan accordingly.

This
initial consultation is free and is included in the time you are booking. At the end of this consultation we will have agreed what areas I will concentrate on and what areas, if any, I need to miss out. We will also talk about the application speed of the techniques and also the pressures to be used. All information is strictly between the two of us and I assure you that I shall not discuss you or your treatments with anyone else. The hand-written client notes are kept in a locked safe for their security.

At the end of the session while you are relaxing and drinking water, I will give you your specific after care advice and we will also have a brief discussion on what you thought of the treatment. The results of this will be recorded onto your notes and used for the next treatment. The next treatment will therefore start with around 5 minutes discussing any changes in your health/circumstances and your treatment plan for the session will be then be agreed.

I encourage you to be open and honest with your feedback - it is the only way I can improve your future experience - you will not offend me by being constructively truthful.

Sports Massage Therapy is a popular form of treatment for soft tissue injuries and preventing them. It is just as relevant to sports and non-sports related people.

Some problems I treat are: sports injuries, muscular tension/stiffness, back/neck/shoulder pain, shin splints, runner's knee, tennis & golfer's elbow, frozen shoulder, knee problems, iliotibial tract (IT) pain, cervical Dystonia, pre- and post-event treatments.

Other benefits include: reduces pain, reduces injury recovery time, alleviates muscular tension & stiffness, rectifies imbalances, increase fitness capabilities, enhances performance, promotes joint flexibility, softens scar tissue, boosts circulation and lymph flow,, aids removal of toxins, helps combat stress.

As well as manual manipulation and massage techniques I am able to provide hot and cold therapies to make the treatments more effective and to accelerate repair.

Holistic Full Body Massage

The term Holistic Massage, sometimes called Swedish Massage, refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles. I do this by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.

I perform it with you laying first face up and then face down on a professional and comfortable heated massage table. You will be under two freshly laundered bath sheets with only the area being treated being exposed at any one time to ensure your modesty and your comfort.

Fresh cold-pressed pure sweet almond oil is added to each area and I perform a variety of holistic massage techniques such as effleurage, petrissage, kneading, wringing, frictions and percussions. This range of movements will help you relax, sooth you and, if required, invigorate and help to ease any aches and pains. The pressures and speeds of the movements are all controlled by you.

Indian Head Massage

Picture
In India head massage has been used for over a 4000 years. Indian women began offering head massages to their daughters and combined them with oils (including coconut, almond, olive and buttermilk) to keep their hair in good condition. Indian barbers used more vigorous head massages (champis) as a means to refresh their clients.

The Indian Head Massage I practice today (Champissage), was brought to this country in 1988. It uses and adapts classic Swedish massage techniques for treating the scalp, face, neck, shoulders and upper arms. It is extremely effective at treating stress because it works on the areas of the body most effected. fresh sweet almond oil can be used during the scalp treatment to maintain strong healthy shiny hair.

I can perform the treatment with you sat fully clothed or, if you require a firmer back treatment with oils, with a wrapped towel covering your top exposing your upper back, shoulders and the tops of your arms.

Deep Tissue / Remedial Massage

Deep tissue / Remedial massage, as the name implies, uses a deeper pressure than holistic massage to release chronic tension in the deepest layers of muscle fibres, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles).

I am qualified to use gentle traction and my forearms, elbows and fists on the upper and lower body to apply sustained, deep, pressure to release muscle adhesions ('stuck' muscle tissue). Adhesions are important to release because they cause pain, inflammation and limit muscle and joint motion. You will be encouraged to work with me with your breathing and movement to release your muscular tension.  Deep tissue massage is both corrective and therapeutic; it releases deeply held tension and encourages healthy blood and oxygen circulation to your muscles.  It usually focuses on specific areas according to your specific needs and may cause soreness during or after the session - your feedback will be encouraged to ensure I work safely within your pain threshold.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Picture
Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD) is a very gentle form of massage that helps stimulate the flow of lymph around the body to aid detoxification and cleansing.

It is very effective for eliminating the fluid retained with, for example, swollen ankles and tired, puffy, eyes. Swelling caused by operations, including cosmetic surgery and Botox, can also be improved using this therapy (your Surgeon's consent will be required).

It can boost weak immune systems and thus help prevent recurrent infections, improve tissue regeneration and reduce scar tissue, aid injury recovery and boost low energy levels.  It can be particularly useful for working with clients who have low pain thresholds and suffer from conditions such as fibromyalgia as it uses an extremely light pressure, is rhythmic, relaxing and calms the nervous system. Unfortunately I am unable to treat you with MLD if you are diagnosed by your medical specialist as having Lymphoedema.

Oncology Massage

Picture
Oncology Massage is the modification of existing massage therapy techniques in order to safely work within complications of cancer and it's treatment. Anyone who has ever received cancer treatment, from those in active treatment to those in recovery or survivorship, as well as those at the end of life, are best served by a massage therapist who has received specific training in Oncology Massage such as myself.

Essential aspects of my skill set are an informed understanding of the disease itself and the many ways it can affect the hum,an body, the side effects of cancer treatments, such as medications, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, and the ability to modify massage techniques in order to adapt for these side effects, as well as fore the disease.

In addition, I have a particular insight into cancer, it's effects and treatments due to having been through it all recently myself.
